All About the Iliopsoas Presented by Alex Susbauer, BCSI, LMT, CPT

4 Contact Hour CEs, NCBTMB Approval Pending

$100

The psoas usually needs no introduction…it’s role in balancing (or unbalancing) the human body is well known in the massage and bodywork community. The Iliacus is less well-known but still has an incredible influence of our balance and movement. In this 4 hour deep dive we will cover the anatomy, movement, postural implications, indications, contraindications and bodywork treatment for the iliacus and psoas muscles. We will start with abdominal palpation for those that have not performed iliacus or psoas work before and progress to doing focused, specific work to ease, free and balance the myofascia of the iliacus and psoas.

This workshop is part of a series of “Deep Dive” Workshops held by Alex in his studio space in Mt Tabor. As such, space is limited to 8 students.

Structure & Function of the Hip

Structure & Function of the Hip: Posture, Gait, Movement and Integrative Manual Therapy Strategies with Alex Susbauer, LMT, BCSI, CPT.

Cost: $100

4 Contact Hour CEs, NCBTMB Approval Pending

Based on the popular Posture Assessment Deep Dive Series, this workshop will explore the bone, fascial and muscular structure of the hip. We will examine the shape of the bones, the manner in which they line up to make the joints, the connective tissues that hold them together, and the muscles that move them. Using these building blocks we will explore posture, gait and several functional movements of the hip, lumbar spine and femur. We will explore common postural patterns and the myofascial structures that lead to these patterns. We will perform gait analysis in comparison to the postural assessment. We will explore how fascial lines of tension telegraph across the body into the pelvis. We will also look at ways to recognize restricted fascia and tense muscles, even in areas where the posture is neutral. Students will be given a worksheet of posture, gait and movement checks to go through when assessing clients. The workshop will be generously peppered with Integrative Bodywork Strategies to address the issues found in assessment. These strategies are open-ended enough to allow the participants to address the issues they assess in whatever style/modality they choose. We will look at numerous examples of postural distortion patterns in a slideshow format but we will also be spending our time looking at the posture, gait and movement of workshop participants.

This workshop is part of the “Deep Dive” Series of Workshops held by Alex in his studio space in Mt Tabor. As such, space is limited to 8 students.

This workshop will cover the intricacies, details, and relationships of the shoulder complex from its attachment at the thoracic outlet to its ultimate expressive end, the hand. Explore with us an integrated approach to problem solving one of the most commonly recognized areas of client complaint: the shoulder and arm. This small class, two-day workshop, will cover visual and palpatory assessment as well as application of fascial, myofascial, deep tissue, muscle energy, and mobilization techniques for the shoulder joint, arm, and hand.

At the end of this workshop students will have a better understanding of the posture and postural implications of the shoulder and a multitude of techniques for releasing, freeing, mobilizing and reengaging the myofascial anatomy of the shoulder, arm and hand. It is our goal that you will walk away from this workshop with a more profound connection and responsiveness to myofascial tissue.

For this workshop we request that you wear clothing appropriate for posture assessment and bodywork for the upper body, such as athletic clothing, tank tops, sports bras, bathing suit tops, etc. Being able to see as much of the details as we can in a client’s posture is a significant part of treatment planning.

Understanding Pain with Jonathan C Primack May 2024

As bodyworkers… as massage therapists…. As health care professionals we encounter the issues of pain with every single client that we work with. Pain and how we manage it is more complicated than most of us actually realize. We as health care professionals have a very important role on the front line of pain management and the more we understand the complex nature of pain the better equipped we are to support our clients. Together we will take a look at the most up to date aspects of pain science and get a better, deeper, more accurate look at how pain is created and how to help our clients more effectively. Exploring the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems will give you a more nuanced understanding the Biopsychosocial model of pain theory. This four hour class will also be taking a deeper look at the Inflammatory Response as well as the specific phases of injury and recovery.

ALL ABOUT TENDONS (AND FASCIA TOO)
4 Contact Hour CEs, NCBTMB Approval Pending

$100

The world of fascia has expanded greatly in the last decade and our understanding of how our fascia works has changed dramatically in that time. This workshop is designed to distill much of my own personal research into tendons and fascia into a succinct, manageable and useful form. We will examine current understanding of tendons and fascia and look at treatment options including physical therapy, Structural Integration, bodywork and massage. We will also examine tendons and fascia in a wholistic setting by looking at lifestyle and nutrition factors (please note that I am not a nutritionist and will not be dispensing nutrition advice). We will look at how the choices we make about our body affect the way that fascia and tendons form-so vitally important for those of us who make our living using our bodies!

This workshop will leave you with a better understanding of some of the anatomy and physiology of tendons and fascia in the hopes that this will inform your choices in your own life and practice of bodywork. We will explore treatment options available to massage therapists but also make you aware of treatment options that can be pursued through physical therapy and other disciplines.

This workshop will be mostly informational but there will be a small segment of bodywork techniques to complement the instruction.

This workshop is part of a series of “Deep Dive” Workshops held by Alex in his studio space in Mt Tabor. As such, space is limited to 8 students.

We find that working to balance the pelvis is an essential part of balancing a client’s entire skeletal structure as well as creating a more fluid, comfortable and functional body. In our workshop we aim to help clarify what the pelvis is, how it relates to the rest of our structure, and how we can work to create more ease and mobility in this crucial area of the body.

This two-day workshop will be filled with nothing but bodywork, assessment and treatment strategies relating to the structures, muscular connections and fascial patterning of the pelvis, with an emphasis on its relationship to the spine.

For this workshop we request that you wear clothing appropriate for posture assessment and bodywork for the upper body, such as athletic clothing, tank tops, sports bras, bathing suit tops, etc. Being able to see as much of the details as we can in a client’s posture is a significant part of treatment planning.

Ethics Through the Lens of Neuroscience with Jonathan C Primack April 2024

Ethics is a complex concept that is simultaneously an incredibly important concept. Nearly every day most of us in the field of bodywork are faced with ethical concerns, Sometimes small.... sometimes not so small. Whether it is directly with the clients we are working with or perhaps an employer that we are working for. Issues can even arise between peers or coworkers in the field as well. The decisions that we make that the actions that we engage in not only reflect our own personal and professional code of ethics but also have an effect upon the industry of massage and bodywork as a whole. A strong and clear understanding of the ethical principles that guide each and everyone of us through our days is essential to support healthy work practices and professional relationships.

Join Jonathan Primack BA~ LMT # 10789 as we look at the concept of ethics through the intricate and fascinating lens of neuroscience. Taking a closer look at the complicated structure of the central and peripheral nervous system, as well as its development within each individual, will create a meaningful perspective on how it interprets, processes, and reacts to the world that surrounds us. It is in this way we can better understand many of the ethical scenarios we face regularly. This four hour workshop meets the standards outlined by the OBMT & The Washington Department Of Health.

The foot and ankle are recognized as one of the most complicated structures in the human body. The effects of imbalance or dysfunction here in this specific area can not only be seen locally but any of the problems in a client’s feet can be felt throughout their entire body. Once our base of support starts shifting everything in the body has to compensate to keep upright against these subtle changes.  Add injuries and years of holding and compensation and you've got a recipe for plantar fasciitis, ankle sprains, arch problems, Achilles tendon issues and so much more.  We are here to help clear up the mystery and support you in your exploration and being a bigger part of the solution for your clients…

THE WORK-LESS WORKSHOP: A DEEP DIVE INTO SUSTAINABLE BODY MECHANICS

Cost $100

It's no secret that manual therapy (indeed anything you do often with your hands) can lead to overuse injuries, and sometimes these injuries can be career ending. The statistics of injury in massage therapy are alarming. However, there are ways to work that will accelerate this overuse process and ways to work that will mitigate these stresses on one's hands. In this workshop (which is an extension of the All About Tendons and Fascia Workshop) we will examine the science behind fascia, tendons, and overuse injuries, and use this as a springboard to explore body mechanics techniques that will help avoid overusing the hands when performing massage and bodywork. Concepts covered include: how little can you work to be effective, understanding the intention for your techniques, exploring alternate client positions, how to involve your client in the therapeutic process, and things you can do to help your own fascia stay healthy.

We will first take some time to explore the science of injury and fascia. Then, I will demonstrate body mechanics ideas across the entire body, utilizing common client complaint areas as a focus. Finally, there will be plenty of table-side assistance time to help you figure out mechanics that work FOR YOU! Students are encouraged to bring in challenges they have when working with clients at the table.

This workshop is not about “good” body mechanics, it is about SUSTAINABLE body mechanics.

Give Them a Hand: A Deep Dive into Hand and Forearm Anatomy, Pathology and Bodywork.

Presented by Alex Susbauer, BCSI, LMT, CPT

Working with our hands is a very rewarding and potentially injury-causing activity and the line between use and overuse is often very small. This workshop aims to take a deeper look at the anatomy of the forearm and hand and explore common pathologies seen in a manual therapy practice. All of this will be interwoven with specific, focused bodywork for the forearm and hand with an emphasis on techniques that won’t overuse the therapist’s hands in the process. We will discuss ways in which bodywork can support our clients with hand and forearm issues and when it would be more appropriate to refer our clients out. Some highlights include: tenosynovitis conditions, carpal tunnel syndrome, epicondyle related pathologies, nerve locations as well as radius and carpal movements and mobilizations.

The Mostly Side Lying Neck Workshop 1/9/24

The Mostly Side Lying Neck Workshop

Presented by Alex Susbauer, BCSI, LMT, CPT

Having been forced by injury to make some significant changes to my style of bodywork, I’ve discovered that it is possible to not only do effective work on the neck in the sidelying position, but that the side lying position affords a unique access point to allow manual therapy that can’t be done as easily or effectively in other positions.

We will first take a tour of the anatomy of the neck to get a deeper understanding of where and how we will be working. Then we will explore the possibilities that the side lying position can offer Integrative Manual Therapy. Highlights include cleaning the splenius pocket, eye engagements to release the suboccipitals, and a safe, effective way to work with the anterior cervical muscles.

While this workshop is designed to stand on its own, it is a great complement to the IBMT Workshops involving the Torso, Neck, and Shoulders.

This workshop is part of a series of “Deep Dive” Workshops held by Alex in his studio space in Mt Tabor. As such, space is limited to 8 students.

Deep Dive into Torso Posture

Posture Assessment of the Torso

A Deep Dive into Posture Assessment (and some Myofascial and Movement Assessment too) with Alex Susbauer, LMT, BCSI.

Have you ever been to a workshop where the instructor quickly dissected a student’s posture and left most everyone wondering what just happened? Get confused about what exactly to look for when assessing posture? Want to know more about posture in a structured, check-list style format? Then this workshop is made for you!

In this small group, 3 hour workshop we will explore the posture of the hips, spine, rib cage and neck. We will explore bone positions in real and relative motion comparisons. We will explore common postural patterns and the myofascial structures responsible for creating these patterns. We will explore how fascial lines of tension telegraph across the torso to connect postural patterns in the lower and upper body. We will also look at ways to recognize restricted fascia and tense muscles, even in areas where the posture is neutral.

Students will be given a worksheet of postural checks to go through when looking at clients. This is a great tool when first learning to do posture assessment.

We will look at numerous examples of postural distortion patterns in a slideshow format but we will also be spending most of our time looking at the posture of workshop participants. Please bring or wear torso assessment appropriate clothing such as athletic shorts, sports bras, tank tops, etc. if you would like to have your posture assessed in class.

While this workshop is designed to stand on its own, it is a great complement to the IBMT Workshops involving the Torso, Neck, Hips and Shoulders.

This workshop is part of the “Deep Dive” Series of Workshops held by Alex in his studio space in Mt Tabor. As such, space is limited to 10 students.

Ethics Through the Lens of Neuroscience with Jonathan C Primack

Wednesday November 8th 2023 - 5pm-9pm

NCBTMB Approved Provider #1000101

This Class is full. Stay tuned as there will be more in 2024…

Ethics is a complex concept that is simultaneously an incredibly important concept. Nearly every day most of us in the field of bodywork and massage are faced with ethical concerns, Sometimes small.... sometimes not so small. Whether these ethical dilemmas arise between ourselves and the clients we are working with or, perhaps an employer that we are working for or, even the ethical issues that arise between peers or coworkers, they all deserve a deeper examination.

Taking a closer look at the complex structure of the Central and Peripheral Nervous System, as well as its development within each individual, and how trauma can affect the human nervous system will create a meaningful perspective on how each individual human interprets, processes, and reacts to the world that surrounds us. It is in this way we can better understand many of the ethical scenarios we face regularly and support ourselves and our clients in very crucial ways.

The decisions that we make that the actions that we engage in not only reflect our own personal and professional code of ethics, but also have a significant effect upon the industry of massage and bodywork as a whole. A strong and clear understanding of the ethical principles that guide each and everyone of us through our days is essential to support healthy work practices and professional relationships. Join Jonathan Primack BA~ LMT # 10789 as we look at the concept of ethics through the intricate and fascinating lens of neuroscience.

Students will be provided a detailed handout that will support the lecture and power point presentation and will also be asked to participate in an exchange of intellectual discussion concerning the topics being presented. Specifics include: a working code of ethics, a look at some of the essential organs of the nervous system and how they play a role in the development of human behavior, comparisons between the nervous system and the musculoskeletal system, policies and practices that help support and ethical massage practice.

All too often we refer to the “shoulder” without even considering its complexity and yet so many clients we see have issues with this multi-joint structure. It is our goal for this workshop to help clarify the structures in the shoulder and give participants a strong foundation of anatomy, assessment and technique to be able to create shoulders that move fluidly and hang easily from the torso.

Our two day workshop will be filled with nothing but bodywork, assessment and treatment strategies relating to the structures, muscular connections and fascial patterning of the shoulder, specifically as it relates to its connections to the thorax and neck.

Some feedback from Integrative Bodywork for the Manual Therapist Workshops:

“These guys are bodywork GOLD!”

“The workshop was a great balance between the anatomical nerdery and the table-time to understand the applications”.

Being able to see as much of the details as we can in a client’s spine and shoulder region is a significant part of treatment planning. For this workshop we request that you wear clothing appropriate for posture assessment and bodywork for the torso such as athletic clothing, sports or other full-coverage bras, bathing suits, tank tops, boxer-type briefs, etc.

There will be a 60 minute lunch break each day.

This, like all of our workshops, is a small-group class with lots of direct table-side assistance. There is limited availability so sign up soon!

"Knot the Rhomboids?!" - A Deep Dive into the Deep Back with Alex

“Knot the Rhomboids?!”

A Deep Dive into the Deep Back with Alex Susbauer, LMT, BCSI

Ever wondered why the rhomboids can get such nasty knots in them? Ever have clients with a specific pain near their shoulder blade that can be almost impossible to reach? Does it sometimes hurt more when they take a deep breath in? Do you want to get learn or refine some techniques to help clients with those persistent, nagging aches they get near or under their shoulder blade?

So many times I’ve seen clients and practitioners struggle with dealing with “knots” in their rhomboids only to discover that those “knots” are actually rib angles being felt under all of the back and shoulder muscles. Over the course of my manual therapy career I’ve completely changed the way I work with the back as I’ve learned more precisely what structures are involved in the mid-back. I’ve created this workshop to explore in detail assessment, palpation and manual therapy techniques for the musculoskeletal structures that make up the mid and upper back.

During these 4 hours we will explore the musculoskeletal anatomy of the spine and ribs, especially focused on the upper thoracic region. We will also cover several techniques to release key areas in the back to bring more ease and mobility to the spine and rib cage. The postural position that results from this work can have a huge impact on the back itself but also the neck and shoulders, which rest upon it.

This workshop is part of a series of “Deep Dive” Workshops held by Alex in his studio space in Mt Tabor. As such, space is limited to 8 students.

Max students: 10

We will spend the morning (3 hours) delving into posture and movement assessment. We will explore bone positions in real and relative motion comparisons. We will explore common postural patterns and the myofascial structures responsible for creating these patterns. We will explore how fascial lines of tension connect postural patterns throughout the upper body. We will also look at ways to recognize restricted fascia and tense muscles, even in areas where the posture is neutral. We will also look at breathing pattern issues and how these can be related to neck and shoulder posture, tension and pain. Students will be given a worksheet of postural checks to go through when looking at clients.

We will look at numerous examples of postural distortion patterns in a slideshow format but we will also be spending most of our time looking at the posture of workshop participants so we can address any postural concerns with our work in the afternoon. Please bring or wear torso assessment appropriate clothing such as athletic shorts, sports bras, tank tops, etc. if you would like to have your posture assessed in class.

The afternoon (5 hours) will be spent learning efficient methods of releasing the most important myofascial structures outlined in the morning’s posture assessment. A heavy emphasis will be placed on body mechanics to ensure that therapists are not straining themselves to release their client’s tensions. We will explore fascial, myofascial and integrative bodywork techniques to release tissues in the torso, shoulders and neck addressing common client complaint areas, helping our clients stand taller, breath easier and move with less restrictions and discomfort.

The Work-Less Workshop: A Deep Dive into Sustainable Body Mechanics

THE WORK-LESS WORKSHOP: A DEEP DIVE INTO SUSTAINABLE BODY MECHANICS
7/18/23, 6-9 PM
3 CEUs

This workshop is part of a series of “Deep Dive” Workshops held by Alex in his studio space in Mt Tabor. As such, space is limited to 8 students.

The Mostly Side Lying Neck Workshop

Presented by Alex Susbauer, LMT, BCSI of IBMT
