In this video Jonathan and Alex discuss the entire developmental process of the Integrative Bodywork Textbooks.
July 5, 2022
About six months ago someone asked us how long it took for us, from start to finish to complete the 2nd edition of Integrated Bodywork For The Manual Therapist. At the time our answer was… “ it is incalculable.”
Having said that, it started a conversation between ourselves about it all.
As we published the first edition, we knew that there was more we needed to get done. We felt like what we had put together was incredibly solid, but flawed. As our workshops grew and the textbook got into more and more peoples hands we started receiving so much helpful feedback.
A list of missing techniques, and redo photos, and gotta have a drawing for all of that began. Discussion after discussion about how to make these texts better ensued. Idea after idea brought up and flushed out.
Jonathan spent four hours a day during the shelter in place order, working on drawings. He would tell you that before his eyes he could see the ten thousand hour principle unfolding as his skills increased. Alex became such an expert in digital color design working on our covers that he could probably get a job at Pixar now. We enlisted Alex’s family for our mid-pandemic photo shoot and have so many photos of us in masks as we shot the needed pictures.
Our proofreaders, oh thank goodness for our proofreaders. The 2nd Edition has a level of depth that would not have been possible without the input from these fabulous, patient, and valuable individuals. We chose to work with proofreader who not only looked as grammer, spelling, and punctuation, but who also simultaneously understand Integrative Bodywork so we could get corrections about incorrect information on muscles and clarifications around technique and intentions.
We can tell you one and all for the last time…“No… there is no muscle group called the Humstrings!”
So many people helped in small and big ways.
So many people offered us valuable perspectives.
So many people made a contribution to our project and these textbooks.
Here today we present you with the completely new and improved Integrative Bodywork For The Manual Therapist. We created these as what we feel is a great balance between an approach and philosophy to manual therapy and an encyclopedia of effective techniques to use under the umbrella of this bodywork philosophy.
As students and as instructors we have seen an awful lot of second and third and fourth editions of textbooks that were lacking in substantive change and value. We made sure that we did not follow that model. New techniques, new drawings, new diagrams, new supporting photographs, new perspectives, and writing. Every word was revisited from all three of our precious books, including a full vetting and overhaul of the content and organization of the material. Improved drawings, improved photographs, improved labeling. There is just so much to these new editions without losing what the 1st editions provided for our readers.
While the answer to our curious friend’s query is still … “it is incalculable.” Looking back and seeing so many moments that made these textbooks really and truly come together we can see so much effort. We hope more than anything as you begin to look at and use these textbooks that you too will see all the effort and commitment reflected in the 2nd edition of Integrated Bodywork For The Manual Therapist. This is, after 15 years of writing, teaching, and editing, the manual we have been striving for since the beginning.
To make a difference…
To find a way to make a contribution…
To feel so passionate about supporting a community.
